Pain with Tooth Whitening

Posted by writeradmin

I’ve been whitening my teeth for about two weeks with an at home kit. Everything was going fine until a couple of days ago. That’s when I started having this brief pain. It would only last a few seconds and it always happened at the same spot. It always happens right where I had a tooth repaired with some dental bonding. It lasts just for a few seconds but is pretty strong. I’ve stopped whitening because I don’t want to cause damage to my tooth. Do you think that the dental bonding can be weakening the bonding on my tooth? What do you recommend?

Dear Nora,

Teeth Bleaching trays

I really do not think that the teeth whitening his weakening the dental bonding for a couple of reasons. First, whitening gel has never been known to do any kind of damage to bonding. Second, if dental bonding were damaged, then it would simply fall off.

The type of pain you are describing sounds like there is a sensitive part of the tooth which is being exposed to the whitening gel. This could mean there is an exposed part of the tooth near the dental bonding.

Hopefully, you are doing the bleaching under the care of a dentist. This is important because it prevents serious problems. Your dentist can evaluate problems that come up and fix it.

Though I have not examined you, it sounds like your dentist can just cover the sensitive spot and then you should be able to continue with your whitening. However, make sure this area is covered before you start bleaching again.

You should also bear in mind that bonding has to be replaced every few years.

I hope this helps. There should not be an issue with you getting this repaired and then getting back on track with your bleaching.
