I had porcelain veneers placed. For some reason, when I floss it keeps catching beneath on my porcelain veneers, like it is going under it. When I spoke to my dentist about this and he said not to worry about it. My gum covers any gap. While that is true, couldn’t stuff get caught under my veneers and lead to decay?

Dear Hannah,
I hope that you are otherwise happy with your porcelain veneers. Despite what your dentist said, you are absolutely correct about this not being okay.
This is a problem and your dentist is wrong to ignore it. It sounds like you are dealing with an overhang. This is from a problem with the impression, specifically the impression taken after the teeth are prepared for the veneers. In this case, your dentist did not accurately record the end of the preparation. This makes it hard, if not impossible for the lab to make a smooth finish between the veneer and the tooth and creates a problem with the margin.
When this happens, there is an overhang. This can lead to decay as you are concerned about. This is because things will get trapped there. However, the bigger problem will be that you are very likely to develop gum disease. This can throw off all of your oral health. My guess is your gums are a bit puffy and possibly red. My suggestion is that you tell the dentist that your porcelain veneer needs to be replaced. If your dentist has integrity, he should not have a problem fixing this.
