I had porcelain veneers placed. I really do like them and wanted to take care of them. I’ve been using Crest Pro Health to brush my teeth for about a week. While reading something today I learned that I was not supposed to be using it. Now, I’m worried that I damaged the veneers. I’ve heard that maybe Supersmile would be okay. Is that right? If I did damage them, will tooth whitening fix them?

Dear Helen,

What a great question, and I’m glad that you love your porcelain veneers. I have some good news for you. In the short amount of time that you used your toothpaste, you would not have done significant damage. They should be just fine, but do stop using it. In fact, pretty much all of the over the counter whitening toothpastes you can purchase are not great for your teeth. That is because they use abrasives to whiten your teeth. This will damage the enamel on natural teeth and the glaze on cosmetic dental work.
When it comes to caring for porcelain veneers, Supersmile Whitening toothpaste is a fantastic option. They use a safe protein pellicle to remove surface stains. Some other things you want to avoid are using mouthwash that contains alcohol and baking soda.
You will also want to make sure that your dental hygienist doesn’t use anything like a power prophy jet or acidulated fluoride during your check ups. These will destroy the glaze on your veneers and they will quickly pick up stains. As to your original question, if the glaze is damaged, tooth whitening won’t work. It will only work on natural tooth structure. The glaze or the veneers themselves would have to be replaced.
