Are There Soft Dentures?

Posted by writeradmin

I have a pair of dentures that are driving me crazy. The lower ones are okay. It’s the upper ones I hate. They’re uncomfortable and it makes me gag. Is there any way to get a soft denture for the top part? It will at least give me some relief.

Dear Andrea,

I am glad you wrote. You are not alone in finding dentures difficult to deal with. Most people find them a challenge. While there is not such a thing as a soft denture as a whole, there is a soft liner. These sit inside the denture itself to help with sores and things like that in the lower denture that rests on your jawbone. However, that will not help what you are dealing with.

The problem you are facing is that the upper dentures needs to be firm in order to support your bite. There is a solution that will get rid of the need for a denture plate altogether. If you get dental implants and then anchor the dentures to them. You will no longer have to worry about them feeling uncomfortable. There will be nothing there to gag on, and they will be secure so will never move around.

While it is fairly optional on the upper denture, it is extraordinarily important that you do have dental implants placed on the lower dentures. When your teeth were removed your body received a signal that there were no longer any teeth to support. Because of that it begins to resorb the minerals in your jawbone in order to use them where they are most needed. The downside to this is that it will slowly shrink your jawbone. In about 10 years, you will not have enough jawbone left to keep in your dentures. This is known in dental circles as facial collapse.

Placing dental implants in your lower jaw signals that you still have teeth. Because of that it leaves your jawbone intact.

I hope this helps. This blog is brought to you by an affordable dentist in Baton Rouge Dr. John Theriot.
