I am almost 70 and have always been embarrassed by how crooked my teeth are. My granddaughter has suggested that it’s not too late to fix them and mentioned Invisalign. She said they are braces that have no metal on them. Is that true? Am I too old for it?

Dear Elenora,
Your granddaughter is right. There have been many fantastic improvements in orthodontics that have made it much simpler for people to straighten out their smile. In addition to making smiles more attractive, you will also discover that when a bite is in proper alignment, you may have fewer headaches.
Instead of metal wires and brackets, Invisalign uses clear aligners to straighten your teeth. You can see an image of them pictured above. Even at a conversational distance, no one will know that you are wearing orthodontics. The treatment is designed by a sophisticated software program. You’ll also be able to finish your treatment in about half the time of traditional metal braces.
As to your age, that is not a problem at all. I don’t know the “oldest” person who uses Invisalign to straighten their teeth, but I do know there is a woman in her upper eighties who received Invisalign treatment from a colleague of mine.
A Hidden Benefit of Invisalign for Adults
As we age, our teeth pick up a great deal of stains that make our teeth look yellowish and dull. Many people choose to whiten their teeth. That simple cosmetic procedure can make you look decades younger. To do at-home whitening, their dentist will make them custom-fitted trays and then give them professional strength teeth whitening gel.
If you are getting your teeth straightened with Invisalign, then you already have custom-fitted trays. This means that you won’t need to pay for those. You can just ask your dentist to provide you with the whitening gel. Then you can straighten and whiten your teeth at the same time. This gives you a mini smile makeover at a fraction of the cost.
