I was scheduled to go to a Clear Choice Dental Implant Centers Seminar. I’m hesitant now because I read a few articles that said Clear Choice was unethical and a waste of money. I don’t have a lot of money and don’t want to waste it. I do want a smile that I can be proud of and that allows me to eat whatever I want. So, tell me, are they unethical?

Dear Everett,

I cannot say with complete certainty that every Clear Choice Dental Implant Center is unethical. Each one is different. I have, however, heard from patients and colleagues about high pressure sales tactics which make me uncomfortable. Some complaints described feeling pressured into agreeing right then and there. They also tend to be a one size fits all clinic, pushing all patients toward the all-on-four dental implants. While a good procedure for some, I certainly wouldn’t say the majority of patients need it. In fact, most would be better served with the more traditional implant supported dentures.
I’m sure many of the dentists working there are skilled. They do tend to have high turn over because many that work there are building up their experience and saving money in order to start their own practice. They are a corporate model. Less personal. More profit driven. I’ve heard some patients describe it as a conveyor belt. A large complaint has been that there is not follow up care. There is no harm in going to their seminar if you have time on your hands.
If you do get a treatment plan from them, I do suggest that you get a second opinion from a skilled implant dentist in private practice. It is not a recognized specialty, so you should be careful either way. There are countless dental implant horror stories. This is one of the most advanced procedures there is.
If I were getting dental implants, I would be certain they have advanced training and experience. Look for someone who is a fellow with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
