I am trying to get some help about a front tooth which has been knocked out. The root is still intact. Is there a way for me to get a root canal and dental crown without also needing a partial plate or a dental bridge? I’d just like one on the tooth that is broken, but I’ve had two dentists say no.

Dear Trudy,
While it is possible to have a root canal and crown placed on a single broken front tooth, it will depend on a few factors. First, how much of the tooth is broken off. Second, the type of bite you have. Finally, the philosophy and skill of the dentist. All of that will factor into the decision. Many dentists, in cases like yours will prefer to use dental implants.
In order to do a root canal treatment and a crown on a broken off front tooth would require putting a post in the tooth to give the support needed. The mechanics of a front tooth are a bit tricky. There is a way to do it, but dentists need to be aware of the rotational force of the front tooth. The roots of a front teeth are round, which means that round posts need some extra help in providing resistance. One thing that can help with that is to use two posts.
The type of post used should also be taken into account. Too many dentists think that the firmer the post, the stronger, but in the case of a front tooth the tipping forces can end up cracking the root. Because of that, it would be better to use either a fiberglass or a carbon fiber post. Both of these are more flexible.
Again, it will still depend on your bite and the amount of tooth you lost. If those make it difficult for you and you don’t want a bridge or plate, then I would suggest the dental implant.
