I have problems with two of my teeth. One of my lateral incisors is missing. It’s always been missing. I’ve had a dental flipper for most of my life to take the place of that tooth but it’s really embarrassing to be in my twenties and have a “tooth” that comes in and out. I also have a tooth over a couple of spots that is slightly recessed from the rest of my teeth. Are there permanent solutions for these problems?

Dear Claire,
There are definitely good solutions for you. First, for the congenitally missing tooth, as long as the two adjacent teeth are healthy, then I would recommend you get a dental implant to replace that tooth. It’s permanent, secure, and the closest thing to having a healthy, natural tooth in your jaw. If the adjacent teeth need dental crowns, then you might want a dental bridge instead which can treat both problems at the same time. You didn’t mention those teeth needing work, so the dental implant would be a far superior treatment.
As for the recessed tooth. I would see an expert cosmetic dentist and either have dental bonding done or place a porcelain veneer on that tooth. The veneer is more expensive but will last much longer.
All of the procedures I mentioned will require a dentist with additional post-doctoral training. Dental school will not be enough. They are all advanced procedures and when not done correctly can lead to horror stories. Make sure you check out the training the dentist has received for those specific procedures before moving forward.
You can have a beautiful smile that you will be proud of, and no longer need to take out a tooth at the end of the day.
