My dentist offers this zoom whitening thing, but you have to do it in the office and it whitens your teeth all at once. I ‘ve been trying to figure out a way to bleach my teeth from home so that it can be done gradually and it won’t be like BAM white teeth. Is there a reason I can’t just use the Clorox bleach that I have at home? It is bleach. My goal is to whiten my teeth this year and then straighten them next year with braces.

Dear Sierra,
While I am going to nix the Clorox idea for reasons I will explain in just a second, I do have some good options for you. So why not use the Clorox? After all, like you said, it is bleach. When dentists say “bleaching your teeth” they are not actually using bleach. Instead, they use a special peroxide gel formula that whitens your teeth.
Bleach is a base, like lye. If you used Clorox, or another brand of bleach, it can cause damage to the tissue inside your mouth. In fact, when a dentist does a root canal treatment, they will often use bleach to dissolve all the left over debris inside the tooth’s canal. What you want is a peroxide gel to whiten your teeth.
In the case of Zoom Whitening it is brushed onto your teeth in a way that adheres it there, then uses a special light that activates it to work faster. However, there is also a take home whitening that is used as well with bleaching trays, such as what you see above. Even a dentist who prefers Zoom can provide these for you. They also allow you to whiten your teeth gradually the way you were hoping.
That being said, you mentioned that you were wanting to straighten your teeth as well. Instead of separating those two procedures out and paying all that money, I’m going to suggest you combine them.
Instead of traditional braces, I would see an Invisalign dentist. These use clear aligners to straighten your teeth. They are invisible even at a conversational distance. Your dentist can then provide you with the professional strength teeth whitening gel. The aligners can double as teeth whitening trays. So you simply wear the gel in the aligners at your convenience and you will straighten and whiten your teeth simultaneously at a fraction of the cost.
