I have been afraid of the dentist for most of my life, which means I’ve been avoiding them unless I was in so much pain I couldn’t avoid it. Those procedures did nothing to change my mind about the dentist but they were necessary. I’m wondering if there is a way I can have my dental work done by an oral surgeon so that I can be knocked out and get the dental work done painlessly. What do you think?

Dear Michael,

I respect the fact that you are looking for solutions to your dental anxiety, especially given your negative experiences. That shows a lot of courage and commitment to your oral health.
I have some great news for you, as well. There is a way for you to have both anxiety-free and pain-free dental care without having to see an oral surgeon.
My recommendation is that you see a sedation dentist. There are three levels of sedation. In your place, I would look for one who offers oral conscious sedation. This is administered by a pill, but it is strong. In fact, it is so strong that you can even sleep through your appointment if you want to. The only downside is that you will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment as well as to stay with you for a few hours at home until you are lucid and steady on your feet again.
People who have had dental anxiety for years have found this to be the solution that changed their lives. You will no longer have to go to the dentist simply because you have a dental emergency. In fact, because you can sleep through your appointments, it will make it easier for both you and your dentist to get more work done in each sitting. This will allow you to catch up on your oral healthcare much faster.
