Dental Implant Horror Story

Posted by writeradmin

I needed to have a substantial amount of work done to my bite. I talked to several dentists and they all recommended a combination of crowns, veneers, and dental implants. One dentist was significantly less expensive than the others, but offered the same procedures and recommendations so I went with him. Unfortunately, all the crowns started falling off. I am left with a mouth full of screws and half teeth. I’m also in constant pain. I wasn’t getting any response from their office when I called, so I finally just went down to their office. When I did, I found out that he had fled the country. Now I am at a loss of what to do. Do you have any advice for me?

Dear Amal,

I am very sorry this has happened to you. While most dentists went into their field in order to help others, it is an unfortunate side of human nature that there will always be some bad apples out there. While you have probably guessed that it will not be possible to recoup your money from this dentist, I can help you know what to do to get your mouth in good condition.

The first thing to beware of is any dentist who is significantly cheaper than other dentists in the same area. There is a big difference between cheap and affordable care. Most affordable dentists will allow you to pay things out over time instead of having the full payment up front. Cheap dentists on the other hand will cut their prices to draw in patients, but that does not equal quality care. In fact, it is usually the opposite because in order to keep their profits up they have to cut corners on the materials they use.

The second thing to look for is a dentist with extensive dental implant training. This is not adequately taught in dental school, so a dentist has to invest in post-doctoral training. In your situation, I would look for a dentist who is a fellow with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Finally, check their reviews. A dentist can look good on paper but have zero people skills.

Best of luck to you. Given the circumstances you are faced, I am willing to bet most qualified dentists will be willing to work with you financially.
