Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, we do provide emergency dental care. If you’re in pain, call our office and we’ll get you in today (225-659-9416). If fear of the dentist keeps you away, be assured we offer sedation and can provide you with anxiety-free care.
Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option available. The procedure is done in two parts. First, a prosthetic tooth root is placed in your jaw. Then, after a period of healing that allows the bone to integrate with the implant, a dental crown will be attached to it. These are completely secure and the closest thing to having a healthy natural tooth again. If you are missing several teeth or all of your teeth, you can have implants attached to a bridge and even to full dentures.
Yes, teeth whitening is completely safe and has been used for well over three decades. In fact, white teeth can make your smile look decades younger. Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, so keeping those teeth nice and bright is a great way to make a positive first impression.
How long do the results last? They are permanently whiter. However, your teeth continue to be susceptible to staining, and they can continue to pick up stains from coffee, tea, wine, and highly pigmented fruit juices. Touch-up whitening is generally recommended every year or two.
There are three simple things you can do on a daily basis that can help keep your teeth and gums healthy. First, brush your teeth at least twice a day. Second, floss at least once a day. Third, limit your snacking. Believe it or not your saliva is an important weapon in the fight against decay. It contains bacteria fighting minerals that help your teeth and gums stay healthy, but constant snacking will counter its efforts and can lead to serious decay even when you brush and floss regularly.
We see children as young as two years old. It is important to get an early start on visits to the dentist. This way their first experiences with the dentist are positive and fun giving them a good relationship with their dental caretakers. What you do not want to do is wait until there is a problem or worse, a dental emergency. Then they will associate the dentist with fear and pain.
We do a large number of services including general dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, and orthodontics. Our general services include procedures like cleanings, fillings, dental crowns, root canal treatments, emergency dental care, and tooth replacement options such as dental bridges and dental implants.
Our cosmetic procedures range from basic procedures such as teeth whitening all the way to advanced procedures such as porcelain veneers which can give you a complete smile makeover. For our adult orthodontics we offer Invisalign, which allows you to straighten your teeth without anyone even knowing. For any person nervous or uncomfortable with the dentist, we offer a variety of sedation options to make your dental care a positive experience.
With modern techniques, root canal treatments are a lot more comfortable than they used to be. There are two main steps. The first step is to clean out the infected or dead pulp tissue inside the tooth. This is done with small files that fit inside the tooth and reach to the root tip. Once it is thoroughly cleaned out and disinfected, then it is filled with a sealer material.
Usually, a tooth with a root canal treatment has been weakened to the point that it needs a crown to keep it from breaking, so after the treatment has been completed, we will recommend restoring the tooth with a crown.
We offer Invisalign, which uses a clear aligner system. This allows you to straighten your teeth without anyone knowing. They are clear, even at a conversational distance. As a bonus, they are more comfortable than traditional braces and work in a fraction of the time.
If you have good oral health, then every six months is the standard. That and good oral health care at home will keep your teeth and gums in good health. If you have issues that need to be dealt with, such as moderate to advanced gum disease, we may recommend cleanings as often as every three months.
Be aware that some dentists are more committed than others at trying to save a tooth. If a dentist is suggesting an extraction and you have your doubts, we are open to giving you a second opinion. At Theriot Family Dental Care, we would like to try to save your tooth whenever it is possible.
That being said, here are some reasons a tooth extraction might be necessary:
- For orthodontic reasons: More space is needed in order to straighten the rest of your teeth.
- Decay has progressed so far that there isn’t enough of the tooth left to successfully restore it.
- Certain fractures make a tooth unrestorable.
- A tooth is impacted (fails to fully erupt). This is the case with most wisdom teeth that need to be removed.
- Advanced gum disease has made the tooth too weak to survive.
Yes, we do offer holistic dental care through mercury-free fillings, metal-free dental care (using zirconia crowns), and will even work around any results of a Clifford’s Test that you’ve had.
We understand that sometimes affording dental care is a challenge, which is why we take steps to help patients get affordable dental care. In addition to staging your treatments, we have multiple payment options. We accept all major credit cards, and even have an in-house dental savings/insurance plan. We also pair with Care Credit which can provide low and no-interest payments on care.
Absolutely. In fact, we cater to patients with dental anxiety and strive to give them positive experiences that change their view and even help them look forward to seeing the dentist. In our office we have two levels of sedation: nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. This way we can tailor sedation to the level of anxiety the patient has, giving them the perfect treatment.
