Since he graduated from dental school in 2002, Dr. John C. Theriot has been committed to continuing professional education, taking classes on a variety of subjects at twice the rate required by the Louisiana state dental board. In particular, he has pursued extensive post-graduate training in dental implantology, including graduating from the Misch International Implant Institute. He has earned Fellow status with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, an honor that has required a commitment to regular coursework in this discipline as well as the successful completion of a number of cases.
He has also obtained advanced training in conscious sedation and maintains membership in the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation.
Additionally, he maintains membership in the Seattle Study Club, an international network of dentists who are committed to excellence in dental care. They meet locally for interactive educational programs, discussion on the latest developments in dentistry, and presentations by world-renowned clinical speakers.
Approach & Philosophy
Dr. Theriot believes in preventive dentistry and in the conservation of the patient’s natural tooth structure whenever possible. This means two things: when a tooth is compromised, extraction is not always the answer—often, the natural tooth can be saved—and proper dental care at home, along with regular cleanings, are important for keeping dental work to a minimum.
“My recommendations for treatment always start with the assumption that the patient wants to save their teeth,” Dr. Theriot says. “We stress hygiene as the easiest method to help prevent dental disease and reduce the possibility of needing dental work over the patient’s lifetime. I also believe the patient’s smile affects their self-esteem and confidence, so we always try to have a conversation regarding how they feel about their smile.”
Personal and Professional Life
Dr. John C. Theriot and his family are proud to call South Louisiana home. “I can’t imagine any other place I would want to live, work, or raise my children.”
Originally from Pierre Part, Dr. Theriot first attended Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, where he received a four-year degree, before earning his DDS degree from the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans.
After dental school, Dr. Theriot gained valuable experience in a group practice in Houma, then established his own practice, Theriot Family Dental Care, in Lafayette, later opening up offices in Baton Rouge.
When he’s not at the office, Dr. Theriot loves spending time with his wife, Jeannie, his children, Colin and Londyn, and their two beloved dogs, Elle Woods and Moxie. Dr. Theriot also enjoys traveling, hunting, and competing in Ironman triathlons with his wife.
