There are many things that cause dental issues, and tooth-harming foods are one of them. If you want your child to have a strong and healthy smile, you need to teach them which foods are good and bad for their little chompers. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. John Theriot, is happy to give you some tips.
The first thing you can do is tell them about the tooth-healthy foods available, like fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. Then, give them an assignment of monitoring the produce in the house. Have them make a list of the fruits and vegetables you need the next time you take a trip to the store. Then, while you’re at the store, teach your child how to pick the freshest fruits and vegetables. You can even ask the produce person to provide a little tutorial. Kids love learning and responsibility. Plus, you’ll have a new kitchen helper!
On that note, you can also have your child help you in the kitchen. Have them join you when you’re about to make a meal or snack. Show them all the tooth-healthy ingredients you use to make a whole tooth-healthy meal or snack. You can even have them wash and peel the fruits and vegetables. If you don’t have a peeler, it’s best to give them a kid-safe knife rather than a regular knife so they don’t accidentally hurt themselves.
