What is the best type of crown?

Can you tell me what the best type of crown is?

Arianna- Michigan

Arianna,

There are many types of crowns, but most people agree that some form of porcelain is the best.  In that category there are two main types of crowns. Porcelain fused to metal and all porcelain crowns. The porcelain fused to metal crowns are more opaque because they have to hide the metal foundation. They also tend to develop a dark line at the gumline. Because of that, all-porcelain crowns are a better option in most cases. There are some instances in which the metal foundation is necessary.

There is a new technology which now mills the crowns by computer. With CEREC technology you can have the crown placed the same day, which keeps you from the trouble of a temporary crown.

What is an emergency?

Can you tell me what would constitute a dental emergency? I’m in so much pain, but I don’t have a tooth knocked out or anything. Is it possible to go to a weekend emergency dentist just for pain?

Olivia- Maryland

Olivia,

Pain definitely counts as an emergency. I would do a search for an emergency dentist. Tell them what is going on. Many of them can see your right away. Others will work you in that day.

When they see you they’ll be able to get you out of pain and diagnose what is causing the pain. It will probably take a secondary visit, either with them or your normal dentist, to fix the root source of the problem.

If you can’t reach anyone, get back with me.
